Short Movie Review: Dune (2021)

Dreams make good stories, but everything important happens when we’re awake.

This short review doesn’t have any major spoilers!

That’s a Lot of Sand

Dune is about Paul Atreides, the son Duke Leto, who has visions of a woman from the future and must ultimately prove his worth in order to save his family. The movie begins with Duke Leto realizing there are advantages to ruling Arrakis. This means increased access to spice on the desert planet. After arriving on Arrakis, House Atreides meets Fremen fighters and learn how dangerous sandworms can be when harvesting spice. The enemy of House Atreides is House Harkonnen and soldiers have plans of their own to keep in power. Of course, fighting ensues and Paul needs to prove himself not only to his mother, Lady Jessica, but most of all his father who wanted peace. Dune has a nice blend of mythical creatures and mental abilities with futuristic looking aircraft. It reminded me of old meets new or past meets future.

Who is What and Where

There’s been a few adaptations on Frank Herbert’s novel, but this version was directed by Denis Villenueve and written by Jon Spaihts, Denis Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. Part one of his action, drama, and sci-fi movie is two hours and 35 minutes and rated PG-13. Besides the great cinematography by Greig Fraser and music by Hans Zimmer, the cast was equally great. Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides plays a convincing confident but not ready dutiful son. Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica plays a disciplined mother to Paul. Oscar Isaac as Duke plays Leto Atreides. Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho plays Paul’s training mentors. Stellan Skarsgård plays Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Dave Bautista as Beast Rabban Harkonnen plays nephew of Baron Harkonnen. Zendaya as Chani plays a young Fremen woman. Charlotte Rampling plays Reverend Mother Mohiam Emperor’s. Javier Bardem as Stilgar plays the leader of the Fremen tribe. Babs Olusanmokun plays Jamis.

Parting Comments of Dune

There definitely is going to be part two and whether it will be a trilogy is anyone’s guess. Part one ended not on a cliffhanger, but it was clear in which direction Paul Atreides wanted to travel. The second movie should be out in later 2023. For the casting of Zendaya, I believe she will have a bigger role later. The character I hope shows up again is Baron Harkonnen. Most of the scenes were necessary, but I would’ve liked to seen more training between Paul and his mentors and fighting between House Atreides and Harkonnen.

I rate Dune FOUR FINGERS at 90%.
