If you need to survive a two-wave hold-down, bail your board and avoid surfacing in the white water. Don’t struggle and dive as deep as you can. Let the first wave pass over you and follow the board’s leash to the surface. Dive underneath the waves and paddle to calmer water.
If you need to use a defibrillator, remove the victim’s shirt and jewelry and place one pad to the upper right side of chest and the other one on the lower left. Plug the pads into the connector and if a shock is needed, press the orange button. Check the patient’s airway, breathing, and pulse. Give mouth-to-mouth if the victim is not breathing and there is a pulse.
If you are in the sun for a long time, use SPF of 15 or higher three minutes prior to going out into the sun. Don’t go out late morning or early afternoon if you can help it. If you get heat exhaustion or heat stroke, get out of the sun asap.
if you have an overheating engine, put heat and blowers on to draw air away from the engine. Pull over as soon as possible. Turn off the car and allow the engine and radiator to cool for at least 30 minutes. Add coolant to the radiator once it is safe and take it in to an auto shop.
If you cracked a rib, place five strips of medical tape along the rib spread 1 inch apart from the chest to the spine. Put your arm in a sling on the injured side and don’t bend, twist your body, or take deep breaths. Take pain meds and seek medical attention.
