My credit score has ranged all the way from the low to mid-700s to high 700s to low 800s. There are many reasons to have a good credit score like lower interest rates and better chances of easing an employer into hiring you because you don’t have high debt. The highest score a person can get is 850 but only the uber rich are able to do that. It’s the same people who don’t have to wear their underwear over and over again. It’s the same people who can afford a nice, brand new expensive car every year and not think twice about it.
I never cared about my credit score until about ten years ago. I think credit cards are a blessing in disguise and a curse in your closet. There were times if I didn’t have a credit card, I would have been screwed and that’s no way to live. I wish people didn’t have to live that way but unfortunately more people than not rely on credit cards to survive. The bad thing is these vulnerable people are forced into a vicious cycle of high interest and debt that keeps getting bigger and bigger. Banks are a necessary evil and the CEOs profit in ways they shouldn’t and when shit hits the fan, it’s the taxpayers wiping their asses. It’s not fair but this conversation for another time.
Obviously, bankruptcy and liens aren’t something to avoid if you can. I’ve requested my credit report from Equifax and Experian but not TransUnion. Even if you declare bankruptcy which at one point many people think, it’s better not to. Yet, if you do, over the next five to ten years, your credit score will rebound. I know so because I know people who have done it and recovered. In the whole scheme of things, the score you have doesn’t mean you are a good or bad person. Your economic status in life doesn’t mean doesn’t fully dictate if you will have a good or bad score but it certainly has some influence over it.
Even though I can afford to use my credit card here and there, I tend to use it on all my purchases and then pay it off a little at time or sometimes in bigger chunks. It’s a good thing I’m pretty simple and not into the finer things like Gucci or Prada bag and into cheap shit. Whether you have a score in the 500s or low 600s, don’t beat yourself up. Most of us are doing the best we can in tough economic times. Sure, it bothered me that my credit score went down this year, but there was nothing I could do to stop it. I had the hope that over time it would go back up and it did. It didn’t come without hard work and help from others.
It’s not what I wanted to do but here I am. I’m lucky I have a roof over my head, but my tire still blew out on the freeway and had to pay money to replace it and the stupid tow truck. I’m going to have to pay car expenses in the next few weeks. Of course, I’d rather spend my extra money on something fun but again, life happens no matter what. At this point in my life, I’m living life and doing the best I can.
Should you care about your credit score? Yes but not so much that it consumes you!!!
