I laid down to fall asleep. It took a while but once asleep, I was deep in dream land. I found myself in a place I didn’t want to be and frankly, I felt tricked. Someone had lured me into a truck, promising me a great reward. He said it was a great adventure with a buttload of cash in the end. Maybe it wasn’t a truck, but it was some vehicle. There were four tires and four doors. The driver did not turn on the radio, not even to drown out my screams. All the doors were locked.
My phone was still on me. This was a nightmare. As usual I didn’t prepare, and my phone had enough charge on it to last a few hours. Too many people were around me when I got out of the truck. I was guided to this room where I was instructed what to do and what not to do. The truck driver was long gone and hardly saw him again. The woman followed me into another room. This time there were other people there. Some looked like me. These were the brand-new ones. We were called campers.
She told me this was a summer school camp for adults. She repeated again what was allowed and what wasn’t allowed. I wasn’t made to sign any forms but the longer I stayed there, the more I got the impression this was a cult. I was being held against my will even though they told me kit was a great program and how much I would learn. When I asked to leave, I was shown a huge field that went for miles in each direction. There were hills far away and this was the only way to leave. The road in and out of this place were blocked off with enough barbed wire to discourage anyone from entering without permission.
Each day I thought of how I could escape and not get caught. Others had tried and they were punished severely. I wasn’t there long enough to see it but hearing the stories was enough. I had no choice but to pretend I was loyal so I could upgrade and be thought of as a colleague. The person I most wanted to trust me was named Kuna. She was a high ranked leader. Her nickname was Big Star. I saw it in her eyes she had once rebelled and paid dearly for it. She hadn’t fully gotten rid of that rebellion.
I hadn’t reached anyone yet with my phone. I wondered if no one cared until I got an alert of a text message. Someone must have heard it too because the floor underneath me moved in a wave, trying to knock me off balance. I held tightly onto my phone. The edges of the floor curled up and swallowed me. Something was coming toward me. It was a rat. Her name could’ve been Julie. After I was released, I was subjected to tunnels and mazes.
I never found out who texted me. I had lost my phone. I had finally woken up.
