Verdens verste menneske (The Worst Person in the World) (2021) is a foreign film (Norwegian) that centers on the life Julie (Renate Reinsve) during four pivotal years of her life. While there are times you have no compassion for her, by the end of the movie you realize this is about as real a portrayal you’re going to get on screen. There are a few scenes that take you out of the movie, but it made sense due to the nature of the scene. For being a drama/comedy, The story pushes forward at a good pace, I definitely recommend this movie if you want to watch a movie about human relationships and misunderstandings and if you don’t mind reading subtitles.

Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) is a drama/mystery about a girl named Kya Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones) that practically raises herself in the Deep South. She finds herself in trouble for murdering a young man she once knew. Throughout her trial, Kya’s life is presented in a series of flashbacks and current times. There weren’t any mindless filler scenes and by the end, which is the verdict of guilty or innocent, there was enough momentum to bring the movie to the proper ending.

The Iron Claw (2023) is a drama/sports movie based on the real-life family of professional wrestlers. This is probably one of the most depressing movies I’ve seen recently. Due to their overbearing father, the Von Erich brothers find themselves unable to keep up with their father’s high standards. I won’t spoil the ending if you have no idea what happened. I give it up to Holt McCallany for portraying Fritz Von Erich in the most believable way.

The Upside (2018) is another movie based on real-life except this time it’s about a quadriplegic wealthy man and a desperate man who doesn’t really care too much about anything but still looking to better his life. For all their differences, they form a friendship and bond over time until they separate over their differences. I guess you could call this a semi feel-good movie with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart. What’s not to like? Their reactions to each other are hilarious,

Eat Pray Love (2010) is definitely a feel-good movie and adapted from the novel written by Elizabeth Gilbert with the same name. The movie is about a married woman realizing how unhappy she is about her current situation (read marriage) and makes the decision to take a trip around the world to find herself. The shining supporting actor is the character of Richard from Texas played by Richard Jenkins.

Everything, Everywhere All at Once (2023) is beyond such a great movie. I laughed during many scenes of this adventure/action/comedy where Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) and her family jump from one universe to another to preserve themselves and everyone around them. The only problem is not everything is as it seems, and the lines get blurred which makes for an emotional ending, The whole cast was good, but Michelle Yeoh outshined the rest and Jamie Lee Curtis was hilarious.

Wild Mountain Thyme (2020) is about two neighbors that have known each other for a long time in Ireland. Now before I continue, most every critic comments on how the actors and actresses usually have awful accents and in this case Irish. It’s either too over the top, not sounding authentic for obvious reasons, or in the case of Jamie Dornan as Anthony, I needed subtitles to understand some of what he was saying. With this being said, I’m not critical or picky of what an Irish accent should sound like because I have nothing to stand on because I have no clue of what to listen for. Instead, I focused on the story which is basically about family squabbles and while some scenes could’ve been cut out, this movie kept my attention more than The Banshees of Inisherin (sorry Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell). I thought Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt had good chemistry even though they were arguing much of the time. I have to give it to the writing because what wasn’t said was just as important as what was said between them.

King Richard (2021) is the biography/sports movie about Serena and Venus Williams upbringing and how both their parents encouraged them to be the best of the best. You could say their father’s dedication to their training was later seen as an unwillingness to compromise. He had his good reasons and by the end of the movie, it shouldn’t be any surprise of what happened. While Richard had high expectations for his daughters, he still was able to see his own faults although sometimes it had to be thrown into his face. The fact remains without Richard’s unwavering commitment, Serena and Venus would not be two of the greatest tennis players of all time today.
