The Resident is a caliber medical drama that’s on par with E.R. and ten times better than any episode of Grey’s Anatomy after the show went off the rails. The show is about how an idealistic young doctor named Devon Pravesh begins his first day of residency at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a rocky start because the doctor overseeing whether he makes it through or gets kicked out residency on the first day is a senior resident that he has little in common with. Devon becomes to see Dr. Conrad Hawkins as a doctor he wants to emulate on most days. Throughout the six seasons, the doctors and nurses face challenges during their long workdays and personal lives. I will say what made this show great was the quick-witted dialogue and writing overall.
The show was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethie. There are six seasons with a total of 107 episodes running between 43 to 45 minutes long. The first episode aired in January 2018 and the season finale aired in January 2023 and is rated TV-14. The acting by Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Matt Czuchry, and Manish Dayal were superb. My favorite character was Mina Okafor. A few episodes lacked the caliber of most of them, but not bad enough to not watch want to finish the whole episode. Morris Chestnut as Barrett Cain was portrayed a great nemesis to the majority of the doctors and nurses.
The major cast includes Matt Czuchry as Conrad Hawkins, Manish Dayal as Devon Pravesh, Bruce Greenwood as Randolph Bell, Malcolm-Jamal Warner as A.J. Austin, Tasso Feldman as Irvin Feldman, Jane Leeves as Kit Voss, Denitra Isler as Ellen Hundley, Emily VanCamp as Nicollete Nevin, Jessical Miesel as Jessica Moore, Shaunette Renée Wilson as Mina Okafor, Vince Foster as Paul Chu, Jessica Lucas as Billie Sutton, Anuja Joshi as Leela Devi, Michael Hogan as Albert Nolan, Morris Chestnut as Barrett Cain, Andrew McCarthy as Ian Sullivan, Kaley Ronayne as Kincaid Sullivan, and Glenn Morshower as Marshall Winthrop.
I rate The Resident FOUR FINGERS and ONE THUMB at 95%.
