I have to say what was missing in the Game of Thrones was more White Walkers and Targaryen dragons. What is missing although this is only because I deeply miss the character so much of Tyrion Lannister in House of the Dragon although the creators sort of redeemed themselves by including a Lannister ancestor, Tyland, breathing a moderate amount of humor. The bottom line about the Targaryen family line is they are all a serious kind of people, whether with blonde hair or not. Season two focuses about the family quarreling between Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (the rightful heir to the throne as commanded by her father, King Viserys I) and Queen Regent Alicent Hightower (the widow of King Viserys I). Continuing to mess up family plans, depending on which side you are on, Prince Daemon Targaryen has sought refuge away from his niece Rhaenyra. Still remaining loyal to Rhaenyra is Lord Corlys Velaryon, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, and her son Jacaerys Velaryon that she nicknames Jace. Continuing to back Alicent Hightower is Ser Criston Cole, and Prince Aegon II and Prince Aemond Targaryen, her sons.
What really happens besides dragons of all sizes flying around with blonde haired Targaryens instructing them to breath fire and intimidate the other riding Targaryen? A whole bunch of simmering underneath the full out bubbling that will occur in season three. It felt this series played out the scenes fairly well and then stopped short of wanting to see complete vindication of Targaryen vs. Targaryen. Revenge is sometimes best left undone until there is perfect timing. This is the feeling I got from watching episode after episode. There were different plot lines building. Some ended as I anticipated of reevenge with revenge. Some occurred to start events no Targaryen wants to or will reverse. This is where Daemon tries to raise an army in Harrenhal but equally tortured himself with visions and nightmares and where I learned how sinister Aemond can be when he’s not enjoying his role as a Prince.
The breakout role as an actor is Prince Aegon II and how he dealt with this massive blow to his reign. It’s amazing he didn’t try to end his life when he could have. His feud with his brother in the third season is bound to happen and let’s just say I hope he doesn’t redeem himself by way of Theon Greyjoy or try to rule again by way of King Joffrey Baratheon. By the first episode, the Targarygens are well divided and split into Green and Black. The two parties fight to keep old allegiances and form new alliances with the other royal families of Westeros. While there isn’t full out war, expected death occurs and operating outside the Targaryen bloodline has its consequences. I thought these were some of the best scenes along with the scenes between Aemond and Aegon II. By the end of the tenth episode, choices had been made, some with sacrifice and others out of guilt. The true heir hasn’t been decided even though many still in power in different regions believe it to be him or her. Season three will bring viewers closer to the answer or you can just read the fourth book and see how the Targaryen family fighting actually ends.
I rate House of the Dragon: Season Two FOUR FINGERS and ONE THUMB at 92%.
