Kid 90 is a documentary about being growing up in Hollywood during the 80s and 90s. Much of it includes past footage by Soleil Moon Frye made with her handheld camera of herself and friends as she was growing up while living in Hollywood and New York City. Being that I grew up during the same time periods she did except I wasn’t under the microscope like her, much of it resonated with me minus the parties in NYC and crushing on Charlie Sheen among other things. I suppose the closet thing we have in common is that she starred in Punky Brewster, and I watched the show as a kid. In the midst of Soleil evolving from girl to teenager to woman, she also focused on the dangers of having such pressures from inaccurate media portrayals of herself. This led to a recognition of her past drug and alcohol use as well as a reckoning of some of her past relationships as an adult. There were some scenes that were pretty personal to her that she was brave enough to share and these were the best scenes in the raw. The whole 71-minute documentary was fully engaging and definitely recommend watching it because like most people, Soleil doesn’t have all the answers either, even after all the years.
I rate kid 90 FOUR FINGERS and ONE THUMB at 100%.
