Enemies of the State is a documentary by Sonia Kennebeck about a former intelligence analyst, Matt DeHart, that claims the FBI made him the pariah for taking CIA confidential documents. He was arrested for alleged sex crimes in Tennessee and says he was interrogated and tortured by the FBI for the sensitive information he possessed. Matt DeHart is basically targeted by the U.S. government for being a whistleblower first and child pornographer second. The documentary covers major situations leading up to DeHart’s arrest from his childhood to his career in the National Guard. While you can hear the verbal exchanges between the FBI and DeHart, the re-creations of certain situations leading up to his arrest and charges were a little disjointed. This also led to confusion about whether DeHart was actually guilty or innocent.
As a viewer, I’m still not sure what I feel really happened and if DeHart was guilty and if the FBI overstepped. What is clear is that government organizations protect their own interests before the general public and that as a U.S. citizen there are certain things you shouldn’t try to do when it involves the FBI or CIA. As you listen to Matt’s parents, Paul and Leann, you sympathize with them because you would protect your son as much as they did. This is what caring parents do, but if he was a whistleblower, well unfortunately, it gives the U.S. government free reign to ruin your life in any way possible to neutralize the threat. I’m not saying this is right but situations like this tend to be unclear and messy. In the end, Matt DeHart was sentenced to seven and a half years in a plea bargain and released in 2019. Maybe, this is what the FBI wanted. The end game being the less people know about Matt DeHart, the better.
I rate Enemies of the State FOUR FINGERS.
