This documentary RomCon is similar to the Tinder Swindler but just as alarming in terms of sociopathic behavior including gaslighting, lying, and cheating. Jace Peretti is actually Jason Porter, a conman that preyed on women in Canada, and was finally held accountable for his lying and fraud. Jason ingratiated himself into lives of several women while at the same time conning them out of their money without their knowledge. He promised the women a lifetime of partnership and love but instead he gave them a lifetime of trust issues and emotional distress. He told numerous lies to these women and their families in this two-part episode.
A handful of women spoke out against what Jason did to them, but one woman in particular wanted justice for what he had done. Heather Rovet turned her heartbreak and shame into seeking justice for his criminal activity. She reported his deceitful behavior to the police but the response by the police was probably not what she thought would happen. They seemed not to take her situation seriously and had little choice but to wait and see what Jason would do next. It was clearly a mental whirlwind for Heather because she had the evidence on her phone to show how cruel Jason could be but never showed it to the police.
RomCon touches upon the manipulation conmen use to lure in their victims. There were noticeable red flags in hindsight that Jason used to lure Heather into his fraudulent web. He created this fantasy image of him for her and unfortunately, she fell for this fake charm and reality. Sometimes what breaks someone eventually makes them stronger. Upon her reflection of how she gave up three years of her life with him, it is clear the truth of Jason Porter is quite dark. He is a conman who targeted women with money who were also looking for love. He maintained his facade by creating fictional backstories like a writer does with a character.
This will keep happening because dating apps are places predators are happy to find unsuspecting women as their prey. These types of fake relationships is basically a scam and what’s more upsetting is the hundreds of Jasons out there don’t give a crap what they did to the women they financially hurt and emotionally wounded. Two women that knew Jason (one that dated him and one who was a friend of a woman who dated him) described him as feeding women poisoned candy and reaching into someone’s rib and crawling inside. This should serve as a reminder to be aware especially when you are getting to know someone, dating apps or not.
I rate Who the Romcom FOUR FINGERS and ONE THUMB at 100%.
