Netflix needs to apologize to viewers for Mindhunter cancelling after two seasons and now The Waterfront for cancelling after one season. I’m still recommending The Waterfront because I love Holt McCallany as an actor and this crime drama about the Buckley family has a good supporting cast with interesting characters. Harlan Buckley (Holt McCallany) is the owner of a restaurant and his wife, Belle Buckley (Maria Bello) helps him keep clean of all the North Carolina criminal activity surrounding his family. The first issue is his son, Cane Buckley (Jake Weary), being involved in drug running that causes huge problems for the family. The second issue is anything his daughter does, Bree Buckley (Melissa Benoist). She literally is a walking mess but for good reason. The second reason to watch this show is the character of Grady and is played so wickedly great by Topher Grace. His daddy issues are both hilarious and disturbing at the same time. There are only eight episodes that run 45 minutes each. I really thought this show had a good chance of being renewed, but I guess not because attention spans these days among viewers seems to be getting shorter and shorter. This isn’t a good thing because for anyone that can appreciate a slow building movie or TV show like this becomes disappointed when everything greenlit or renewed seems to be content with little substance or meaning on the streaming services. The 1990s and early 2000s are long gone but for some of us, we are getting sick of superhero movies, pointless reality shows, and lackluster TV shows.
I rate The Waterfront FOUR FINGERS and ONE THUMB at 95%.
