Back when I was in grade school, it was all about Trapper Keeper and luckily, I never was interested in Lisa Frank Inc. designs. However, it’s easy to see how Lisa Frank, Inc. was once worth over 50 million dollars based on the designs created by her team. They are colorful subject matter fit for young girls and teenagers. Glitter and Greed include numerous interviews with former employees, journalists, and ex-husband and former president, James Green.
The four-part docuseries includes behind the scenes accounts of what it was like to work under Lisa and James. It was no picnic and what people call toxic managers. They both made threats, had angry outbursts, exhibited erratic and critical behavior, and had unrealistic expectations for their designers. In addition to this, pay was low and hours were long. However, Frank was good with identifying trends and chose to turn her attention to school supplies after her sticker business. Whether Frank and Green had more influence in the success of Lisa Frank, Inc. is up to the viewer. I feel both contributed about equally in the beginning, but as time went on in their marriage, it seemed a little lopsided. What is true is this: the only rainbows at Lisa Frank Inc. were on the walls.
Every good thing without change comes to a bad end and that is what happened when Lisa Frank, Inc. factory closed in 2013. Unfortunately, Frank still had power to convince unsuspecting victims to work with her. These collaborations ended in financial ruin and dreams lost for both Glamour Dolls and Tasselfairy because of Frank. The sad thing is Lisa Frank, Inc. continues to collaborate with well-known companies like Crocs and bands like BTS. While Green lost much of his best artwork, James is probably the happiest between the two of them. He currently lives in Mexico, has an art studio, and supports himself as a coffee shop and bar owner. Those suffered the most are the former employees of Lisa Frank, Inc.
I rate Glitter & Greed FOUR FINGERS at 90%.
