I get that not everyone likes Oliver Stone movies. He’s known to a difficult director because he can and doesn’t care that he is this way. He knows how to push buttons, test the limits of his cast, and is a perfectionist. Through all of this you have to admit Stone knows how to write captivating stories and direct Oscar winning movies. Some of his best movies he’s directed and/or written are Scarface, Platoon, Natural Born Killers, U Turn, and Snowden. This documentary covers the making of Platoon where many of the cast members came together for a nice trip down memory lane of celebration and hardship. They spoke of their experiences from their boot camp training before filming where many of their training excursions were as similar to what happened in actual combat in Vietnam.
Their military advisor, Dale Dye, for two weeks created a living hell for the whole cast including Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Keith David, Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker, Tony Todd, Richard Edson, Francesco Quinn, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Reggie Johnson, Mark Mose, Corey Glover, Chris Pedersen, Bob Orwig, Corkey Ford, and David Neidorf. Charlie Sheen is the narrator and hearing the tales of some of the cast sheds light on the experience of making this independent movie. Platoon is similar to other independent movies that almost didn’t get made where setbacks are common, the cast never experiences filmmaking like this again, is miraculously a box office winner, and goes on to win Academy Awards. If you haven’t watched Platoon from 1986, do yourself a favor and watch it. Then watch this documentary to understand why Oliver Stone didn’t take part in this.
I rate Brothers in Arms: The Making of Platoon FOUR FINGERS at 90%.
