The Spades of The Card Counter
Ever since I saw him on A Most Violent Year, I knew Oscar Isaac was an actor to keep watching. This particular movie, dark and gritty in its material, because this is what Paul Schrader does as a writer and director definitely showcases Oscar Issac’s talents. Issac plays a gambler called William Tell in The Card Counter who is seeking redemption and revenge while trying to find purpose in his life through playing cards. After meeting strangers that become mere acquaintances because he doesn’t let them get too close, the question remains of what he’s willing to lose in the process. If you don’t mind a slower paced movie, this is the movie for you. It also stars Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, and Willem Dafoe. The Card Counter is rated R for some disturbing violence, graphic nudity, language and brief sexuality. It’s running time is one hour and 51 minutes.
